We started with a dream, added some chickens and then threw in some cows - time will tell what comes next.

Dexter Cattle

Dexter Cattle

Our main focus is on breeding purebred, registered, Dexter Cattle. They are a wonderful breed of cattle originating from Ireland. They are not considered a miniature breed though they are small (as far as cows go anyway). They are also very docile making them a great breed for a small family farm. They are commonly considered dual purpose as they are good for both milking and meat, however some consider them a triple- purpose breed as they can also be used as oxen. We register all of our Dexters with the American Dexter Cattle Association.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Clutch of Eggs

While it may not be the main focus of our farm, raising laying hens for eggs is definitely enjoyed here at Riffle Ridge. We have a variety of breeds to give us a wide array of egg colors. We do have a secure coop for the ladies to sleep and nest in, but during the daylight hours, you will find the hens exploring all over as they are free range in the purest sense of the phrase. Throughout the day, we enjoy watching them make their way around the farm, visiting with the cows and horses and even stopping by to mingle with the barn cats before exploring the woods and pastures to see what's new. You know dusk is approaching as they all come back near the coop for the last hour or so of daylight before settling in for the night.

Beef Steer

It was not in our original plan to have steers outside of the Dexter breed, but plans change and we decided until our Dexter herd grows and we gain some steers, we needed to add a few Angus/Hereford crosses to get us started.
